Why doesn't talk therapy work for everyone?

Talk therapy works on the level of the nervous system it is built for. Language-based work requires access to reflection and to the capacity to hold and compare ideas. In an activated or shut-down state that channel narrows, so the same method that helps enormously in one session can find no one home in the next. The honest version is not that talk therapy fails, but that part of the work is getting a person to the level it operates on.

Why doesn't training stick after a workshop?

Skill learning depends on working memory and attention, and those are state-dependent rather than fixed properties of a person. Something genuinely learned in a regulated room can be unreachable in a high-stakes meeting. The skill went in. It is sitting behind a door that is not open that day.

Why does 'just start' help some people and not others?

There are two defensive routes. A mobilised nervous system is already preparing to act, so movement completes a response that is running and discharges it. An immobilised nervous system cannot generate the first movement, and the same advice arrives as evidence of personal failure. From the outside both look like a person not doing the thing, and they need opposite first moves.

How do you tell a blocked access problem from a missing skill?

Four questions separate them. Does the capacity vary with state? Has it ever been present under better conditions? Does adjusting conditions move anything? Is the person frustrated by their own unavailability? Consistent yes points to access. Consistent no points to something that needs building rather than unblocking. Both can be true at once, and the order still holds: an unavailable person cannot learn a missing skill.

What is the sequence that works instead?

State, then access, then the smallest sustainable action. Not goal, plan, accountability — that sequence assumes a regulated nervous system and fails silently when the assumption is wrong, because everyone involved concludes something about the person's character instead of something about their conditions.
